Battery FAQs

What is sustainable energy and how does it relate to batteries?

Sustainable energy comes from renewable energy sources and does not include generation derived from fossil fuels (usually associated with carbon emissions).

As renewable energy sources (ie. solar, wind, hydro, wave) only perform under specific environmental conditions, battery integration is necessary to firm supply and deliver constant reliable power that enables a sustainable future.

What is the difference between AGM and Gel Lead Acid Rechargeable Batteries?

AGM batteries make use of a special glass mat made up of thin glass fibers. This is designed to absorb the electrolytes between the battery plates.

Gel batteries, on the other hand, utilize a special type of silica gel that holds electrolytes together. The thick consistency of the material allows electrons to flow freely from the plates.

What is the difference between Procell Alkaline, Alkaline Intense and High Power Lithium batteries?

Procell Alkaline batteries have a power output profile built to reliably handle the rigors of constant use.

Procell Alkaline Intense batteries have a power profile that can handle the power output needs of high-drain devices for as long as possible. This means that they have up to 30% better longevity when compared to Procell Alkaline.

Procell High Power Lithium industrial batteries can handle a high-rate discharge for a variety of applications, under intermittent or continuous drain.

What are the benefits of integrating batteries for buildings?

Integrating batteries for buildings has several economic and environmental benefits that you should consider. It can aid in lowering your business electricity costs, reducing electricity grid dependence, reduce diesel generator fuel run time costs, improve power reliability, assist in providing a reliable emergency power supply back-up through standby batteries, home backup batteries and uninterrupted power supply systems (UPS power supply), as well as aid in lowering CO2 emissions (zero emissions) for your home or business.

Are lithium batteries the best?

Lithium batteries offer unique benefits from other battery chemistries. They are smaller and tend to be lighter in weight making them often more practical if space becomes an issue, and safer for WHS compliance. Lithium solar batteries allow for almost 100% depth of discharge compared to other batteries typically designed to tolerate max of 70% depth of discharge. Lithium, however, can have certain drawbacks being they are known to emit more heat and therefore have limitations with transport for air-freight being classified as dangerous goods.

Depending on the energy storage application, BSA can help you determine what battery chemistry is best suited for the application environment and your budget.

Do I need to maintain my UPS?

Yes, your UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply is an essential part of your building’s backup power supply, as it will run essential electrical circuits and equipment in the event of network power interruption. Backup batteries and standby batteries are a key component of this system and should be checked and maintained. BSA can help recommend and schedule complete UPS power replacements together with integration of web-based monitoring software for live performance data.

Solar FAQs

What is the best battery for solar and energy storage?

BSA presently recommend solar gel batteries as one of the best solar battery options for scalable energy storage. There are several reasons for this including their resistance to the harsh Australian climate and temperatures. Lithium ion solar battery options are however becoming more common in residential applications as costs reduce.

What is the best type of solar panel?

Monocrystalline panels are considered to be more efficient than Polycrystalline panels and we recommend these for the majority of solar panel installations. These consist of framed silicon panel cells. Panel power output is important and we can provide the following as a guideline:

  •  <200W (portable)
  •  350W+ (residential)
  •  400W+ (commercial)
  •  600W+ (utility-scale)

We will also make considerations regarding solar panel voltage and temperature coefficient rating for suitability of application.

How many solar panels are usually required for a 3 bedroom home?

We do make recommendations and quotes on a case-by-case basis, as several factors are considered when fitting solar panels to your home. As a general estimate, at least 18 x 370W panels is often sufficient for a 6.6kW system. This can however in some cases be increased to approximately 26 panels for a 10kW system.  For more information or to arrange a chat with one of our solar panel experts, get in touch with us today.

Can BSA help with solar and energy storage system design?

We pride ourselves on delivering end-to-end solutions that help you get the job done, which means we can assist with not only providing bulk batteries and solar panels, but we can help you design the most efficient solar and scalable battery storage to suit your business or lifestyle power demands. For more information or to arrange a chat with one of our solar panel experts, get in touch with us today.
